Nathan Haines Saxophone player, born in Auckland, New Zealand on 18 January 1972. Part of a renowned jazz family (his father is bassist Kevin Haines and his brother is guitarist Joel Haines), Nathan started his music career in his late teens and early twenties, with Jazz Committee and Freebass (8), before forming his own band, which eventually became The Enforcers (2). Signing to Huh Records, his debut solo album Shift Left (1995) is the biggest selling New Zealand-recorded jazz album of all time, released globally on Verve Records. In 1995, Haines went to NYC and then to London, where he worked as a live musician and session player, including performing alongside DJ Paul “Trouble” Anderson at his Loft residency. He also began DJing, along with recording drum’n’bass for the Metalheadz label, before signing to Chillifunk Records where he made two albums with producer Phil Asher; his first release with Phil was After Ours. Nathan returned to New Zealand in the early 2000s.

Khan (Khan of Finland, 4E, Khan) Artist: Can Oral (also known as Khan). Origin of Name: The artist’s apartment number, 4E, in the East Village, NYC History: He started using the alias in the 1990s while producing music in New York and it’s often used for his downtempo and electro material. Born in Frankfurt am Main to a Finnish mother and Turkish father, he was raised in Germany and now lives in Berlin. From 1992 to 2002 he lived in New York City and was the owner of the Temple Records shop in the East Village and the associated label, Temple Records N.Y.C. Inc. In 2008 he founded the I’m Single record label. He is the brother of Cem Oral.

Ian Pooley Ian Pooley (born Ian Pinnekamp, 1973) is a German DJ and record producer known for his distinctive house and tech-house sound, often infused with Brazilian influences. Active since the early days of house music in Europe, he has consistently shaped the underground scene with authentic, genre-spanning productions that incorporate elements of jazz, soul, and Krautrock. Pooley grew up immersed in music, inspired by Chicago and Detroit sounds, which set him apart from his peers. His acclaimed albums Meridian and Since Then are considered milestones in house music. He is among the few artists to remix Daft Punk and receive a remix in return. Over the years, he has released numerous tracks and remixes on influential labels, while primarily working through his own imprint, Pooledmusic. His artistry is marked by subtlety and precision, evident in projects like his Silvershower alias, which explored deep and minimal techno. As a respected DJ, Pooley has performed worldwide at major clubs and festivals, blending classics with fresh tracks in dynamic sets. After 17 years, he is preparing to launch a new live show, offering another glimpse into his evolving musical world.

DJ Gregory Real name: Grégory Darsa. alias Point G Style: Unusual within French house—never fully fitting into French Touch, deep house, Latin, Afro, or UK Funky, yet influential in all. Background: Started in Paris in the 90s, influenced by New York house, and became a key figure in the French Touch scene. He is an “accidental hero” of house, respected across scenes but never confined to one. His work on UK Funky (e.g., “Don’t Panic”) and collaborations with artists from various backgrounds highlight his versatility.

DJ Mehdi DJ Mehdi (Mehdi Favéris-Essadi) was a pivotal figure in the French electronic music scene, known for his innovative production, eclectic taste, and role in shaping the global sound of French house and hip-hop. He was part of the Ed Banger Records collective and worked closely with artists like Justice, Cassius, and Daft Punk. Tragically, he passed away in 2011, but his influence endures. Started as a hip-hop DJ and producer, working with 113, Oxmo Puccino, and others. Produced beats for Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Nas, bridging French and American hip-hop.French Touch & Ed Banger Records Co-founded Ed Banger with Pedro Winter (Busy P).   • Chinmaya Dunster is a British musician who has dedicated his life to creating music that bridges Eastern and Western traditions. After studying Indian classical music in the 1970s, he combines sarod, guitar, and various percussion instruments to create contemplative, spiritual soundscapes.

  • Gabrielle Roth (1941-2012) was an American dancer, musician, and movement pioneer who created the 5Rhythms movement meditation practice. Her band, The Mirrors, combines world music influences with trance-inducing rhythms to create meditative soundscapes.

  • Cyro Baptista is a Brazilian percussionist and composer known for his innovative approach to percussion and world music. His unique style blends traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary jazz and experimental sounds.

  • OZO is a contemporary Afro-funk ensemble that draws inspiration from West African percussion traditions. Their music combines traditional African rhythms with modern electronic elements.

  • Carly Barton is a contemporary percussionist and composer known for her meditative approach to rhythm and her exploration of sacred drumming traditions from various cultures.

Dub & Carnaval Music - March 9th 2025

Today’s episode is inspired by the carnaval season and the percussions of Brazil and Guadeloupe. We’ll start by exploring percussions in Dub and experimental music, and willl then journey into the interesting world of Mulsimgauze, percussionnist from Martinique Jonaz Joslen, a carnaval group “à Po” from Guadeloupe “Klé la”, and a Julio “Chocolate” Algendones a Peruvian percusionnist.

A brief description of the artists played in this mix:

  • Steve Reich American composer best known as a pioneer of minimal music in the mid to late 1960s
  • Sub Dub: The pioneering experimental dub duo Sub Dub, were active between 1992-1998 in NYC, produced by Badawi aka Ghost Producer and John Ward, credited as being the catalyst for the so called “illbient” scene, predating Dub Step by over a decade.
  • Woob: is the stage name of Paul Frankland, an English composer, musician and filmmaker who started recording in the early 1990s. Woob’s albums combine elements of ambient, downtempo and space music, with samples from field recordings. Frankland has also recorded under the names of Journeyman and Max & Harvey.
  • Adham Shaikh is a composer, record producer and sound designer living near Nelson, British Columbia. The 21st-century rituals of dance and chill-out have drawn Shaikh to explore the trance phenomenon that these different expressions of music create and allow. Over the years, Shaikh has worked with musicians playing musical instruments from India; Bali, Indonesia; Africa; Scandinavia; Turkey; the United States; and Canada.
  • Muslimgauze was the main musical project of Bryn Jones (17 June 1961 – 14 January 1999), a British ethnic electronica and experimental musician who was influenced by conflicts and history in the Muslim world, often with an emphasis on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. With dozens of albums released under the Muslimgauze name, Jones was prolific, but he never achieved mainstream success. His music has been described by one critic as “among the most startling and unique in the noise underground.
  • Jonaz Joslen: Martinique: sound designer, beatmaker composer and songwriter, also director of documentaries from french caribbean.
  • Klé La: Fervent contributeur de la culture guadeloupéenne, Klé La est ce que l’on appelle un Groupe a Po. Ces groupes à Po sont des groupes faisant partie du carnaval.

Salsa, Cumbia & Dancehall - February 9th 2025

We’ll start with some artists from Jakarta and New Guinea, but also music from ancient ceremonies of Ghana. Then, we’ll get into to the rhythms of salsa and cumbia, featuring percussionists from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia and the US. Finally, we’ll glide into the modern beats of electronic music from Miami, Zambia, and Paris.
