Nathan Haines Saxophone player, born in Auckland, New Zealand on 18 January 1972. Part of a renowned jazz family (his father is bassist Kevin Haines and his brother is guitarist Joel Haines), Nathan started his music career in his late teens and early twenties, with Jazz Committee and Freebass (8), before forming his own band, which eventually became The Enforcers (2). Signing to Huh Records, his debut solo album Shift Left (1995) is the biggest selling New Zealand-recorded jazz album of all time, released globally on Verve Records. In 1995, Haines went to NYC and then to London, where he worked as a live musician and session player, including performing alongside DJ Paul “Trouble” Anderson at his Loft residency. He also began DJing, along with recording drum’n’bass for the Metalheadz label, before signing to Chillifunk Records where he made two albums with producer Phil Asher; his first release with Phil was After Ours. Nathan returned to New Zealand in the early 2000s.

Ian Pooley Ian Pooley (born Ian Pinnekamp, 1973) is a German DJ and record producer known for his distinctive house and tech-house sound, often infused with Brazilian influences. Active since the early days of house music in Europe, he has consistently shaped the underground scene with authentic, genre-spanning productions that incorporate elements of jazz, soul, and Krautrock. Pooley grew up immersed in music, inspired by Chicago and Detroit sounds, which set him apart from his peers. His acclaimed albums Meridian and Since Then are considered milestones in house music. He is among the few artists to remix Daft Punk and receive a remix in return. Over the years, he has released numerous tracks and remixes on influential labels, while primarily working through his own imprint, Pooledmusic. His artistry is marked by subtlety and precision, evident in projects like his Silvershower alias, which explored deep and minimal techno. As a respected DJ, Pooley has performed worldwide at major clubs and festivals, blending classics with fresh tracks in dynamic sets. Ski Oakenfull Dominic “Ski” Oakenfull is an English music producer, keyboard player, and educator. His nickname “Ski” was given by his bandmates in The K-Creative who named him after the dance music artist Adamski. In 2019 Ski interviewed Adamski for a deconstruction video for pointblank Music School
Jazzanova German DJ and producer collective in electronic fusion music from Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. Started as a DJ team in 1995 and moved on to production in 1996. Les capitales, Kinshasa et Brazzaville, se font face de part et d’autre du fleuve Congo, ce qui en fait les capitales les plus proches du monde. - Racines culturelles & musicales :
Malgré des groupes ethniques et un fleuve communs, chaque pays a développé une identité musicale distincte, influencée par son histoire coloniale et ses différences économiques.
La RDC est reconnue pour sa richesse minière et son innovation musicale, tandis que le Congo-Brazzaville est marqué par le pétrole et une culture urbaine dynamique. - Évolution musicale :

Ils m’inspirent tous par l’énergie de leur musique. Je suis vraiment passionné par la façon dont des rythmes simples peuvent créer ce groove et vous faire danser. Hearn Gadbois est un maître percussionniste connu pour son travail dans la musique sacrée et méditative. Il est spécialisé dans les percussions du Moyen-Orient et d’Afrique du Nord, intégrant les traditions rythmiques anciennes dans la pratique spirituelle contemporaine.

Chinmaya Dunster est un musicien britannique qui a dédié sa vie à créer une musique qui relie les traditions orientales et occidentales. Après avoir étudié la musique classique indienne dans les années 1970, il combine le sarod, la guitare et diverses percussions pour créer des paysages sonores contemplatifs et spirituels.

Dans cette résidence, j’explore les rythmes et les percussions de la musique traditionnelle et leur influence sur la musique contemporaine. C’est comme regarder le reflet d’une cuillère et voir notre monde à l’envers, prendre du recul sur la musique que je joue, me menant à une approche différente de la musique.
Dans l’épisode d’aujourd’hui, nous plongerons dans le jazz et sa section rythmique extraordinaire.
Nous examinerons d’abord les pionniers du jazz comme Art Blakey, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa, Clifford Brown, Buddie Rich et des jazzmen modernes comme Medeski, Martin et Wood.

Dub & Carnaval - March 9th 2025
L’épisode d’aujourd’hui est inspiré par la saison du carnaval et les percussions du Brésil et de la Guadeloupe. Nous commencerons par explorer les percussions dans le Dub et la musique expérimentale, puis nous voyagerons dans le monde intéressant de Mulsimgauze, du percussionniste martiniquais Jonaz Joslen, d’un groupe de carnaval « à Po » de Guadeloupe « Klé la », et de Julio « Chocolate » Algendones, un percussionniste péruvien.
A brief description of the artists played in this mix:
- Steve Reich American composer best known as a pioneer of minimal music in the mid to late 1960s
- Sub Dub: The pioneering experimental dub duo Sub Dub, were active between 1992-1998 in NYC, produced by Badawi aka Ghost Producer and John Ward, credited as being the catalyst for the so called “illbient” scene, predating Dub Step by over a decade.
- Woob: is the stage name of Paul Frankland, an English composer, musician and filmmaker who started recording in the early 1990s. Woob’s albums combine elements of ambient, downtempo and space music, with samples from field recordings. Frankland has also recorded under the names of Journeyman and Max & Harvey.
- Adham Shaikh is a composer, record producer and sound designer living near Nelson, British Columbia. The 21st-century rituals of dance and chill-out have drawn Shaikh to explore the trance phenomenon that these different expressions of music create and allow. Over the years, Shaikh has worked with musicians playing musical instruments from India; Bali, Indonesia; Africa; Scandinavia; Turkey; the United States; and Canada.
- Muslimgauze was the main musical project of Bryn Jones (17 June 1961 – 14 January 1999), a British ethnic electronica and experimental musician who was influenced by conflicts and history in the Muslim world, often with an emphasis on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. With dozens of albums released under the Muslimgauze name, Jones was prolific, but he never achieved mainstream success. His music has been described by one critic as “among the most startling and unique in the noise underground.
- Jonaz Joslen: Martinique: sound designer, beatmaker composer and songwriter, also director of documentaries from french caribbean.
- Klé La: Fervent contributeur de la culture guadeloupéenne, Klé La est ce que l’on appelle un Groupe a Po. Ces groupes à Po sont des groupes faisant partie du carnaval.
- Nomine Andrew Ferguson (aka Nomine aka Outrage), began his career as a drum & bass DJ in 1995 under the name Rage.
- Tino Corp. is a record label dedicated to curating unique beats and sounds that are not available from any other source.
- Jah Wobble is an English bass guitarist and singer. He became known to a wider audience as the original bass player in Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late 1970s …
- Julio “Chocolate” Algendones is one of the essential percussionists in the great tradition of Afro-Peruvian music.

Nous commencerons par des artistes de Jakarta et de Nouvelle-Guinée, mais aussi par de la musique issue d’anciennes cérémonies du Ghana. Ensuite, nous aborderons les rythmes de la salsa et de la cumbia, avec des percussionnistes de Cuba, de Porto Rico, de Colombie et des États-Unis.
